Thirteen Things about ME

1. I am *almost* 40.

2. I am VERY happily married to Jason, for 16+ years now.

3. I am a mother...6 living children, 2 lost.

4. I am a military wife...the lifestyle is NOT what I expected.

5. I am a sister...I have two brothers, one sister, two sisters-in-law, and a fiance-in-law.

6. I am an aunt...I have 2 nephews and 1 niece.

7. I am a Christian...this defines all I do...and hopefully defines how people see me.

8. I am overweight...trying to lose weight.

9. I am addicted to Facebook, blogging and computer games.

10. I love good coffee, chocolate, home cooking, and hot tea.

11. I love fall and winter...because I love Thanksgiving and Christmas.

12. I collect cows...though my collection has slowed down in recent years (I have nowhere to display my lovelies).

13. I LOVE comments...and never get enough...must be addicted to those, too....need to work on those addictions....

Thursday Thirteen #41

Thirteen Things about my week (because I don't want to make it *all* about pain....)

1. I was actually having a REALLY good weekend. Jason was home. We were having friends over. My house was (for the most part) clean. I got to go to Ladies' Brew Group. It was all good, Saturday morning.
2. I came home from my brew group to do a couple of last-minute things...make (SWEET!) iced tea, wash the last few dishes, vacuum the rug in the living room.
3. Vacuuming was what did it. SOMETHING in my back decided it didn't like the combination of me and vacuum, and the work we accomplished. I had to stop in the middle, and let my 10-year-old finish.
4. By the time our guests got here (10 minutes later), I could barely move.
5. We had a LOT of fun with our friends....8 kids, 4 adults, hamburgers, and friendship.
6. Oldest daughter had to be at the school by 4:30 pm to head to her last band competition (BTW, YEAH!!! Marching Band is over!!!). Hubby had to take her because I could barely move.
7. Sunday was a little better, after I took a muscle relaxant the night before, but was unable to do a lot.
8. Monday saw steady improvement. Still taking muscle relaxants at night and Ibuprofen during the day.
9. Tuesday, I made the mistake of thinking I could function normally, sans any pharmacopia. Tweaked it again, trying to move laundry from the washer to the dryer. UGH!!
10. Wednesday, sore most of the day...better as the evening wore on, but still sore. Called and made an appointment to see the doctor.
11. Mornings are aweful. Dressing myself is close to impossible. It is rather embarrassing to have to get my daughter to help me put on my socks because I can't bend that far...
12. All of this means that the whole exercise plan is put on hold...can't very well walk my mile per day or work out on the machines. UGH,again.
13. The pain killers are wreaking havoc on my stomach....BLECH. I feel OLD. Hopefully next week I'll have something positive to talk about...I never realized how much my back affected the rest of me. I now have MUCH more sympathy for people with chronic back pain!!
****UPDATE: I officially have sprained my back and have a pinched nerve, aka sciatica. I have MONGO painkillers and muscle relaxants...according to the pharmacy people, I will be "high" for a week or so.

Thursday Thirteen #38

Thirteen Things about trying to get back in the swing of things.

1. Getting *OUT* of my routine is FAR too easy.

2. Getting *out* of my routine means I get far too little sleep.

3. In order to get back into my routine, I HAVE TO get enough sleep.

4. Because I am not getting enough sleep, I have a hard time concentrating.

5. Difficulty concentrating means I am not getting my work done.

6. Which leads to my staying up WAY too late.

7. All of this leads to my getting further and further behind.

8. So, I am *trying* to start taking care of myself again.

9. I am taking all of my vitamins.

10. I am drinking more water.

11. I am working out and walking regularly.

12. One of these days I'll get back to gettting bed at a decent hour.

13. I am *almost* caught up with my work again...and my house is slowly being dug back out...I will be SO glad when my routine is back how I want it!!

Thursday Thirteen #37: On staying awake too late

Thirteen Things I did last night instead of sleeping:

1. Sewed new patches on the husband's uniforms...uniform inspections are today.

2. Hemmed his new dress uniform "trousers"....I TOLD him I HATE/dispise/can't stand hemming those lovely polyester bell-bottoms...but he had to order them online, and they don't come pre-hemmed....

3. Washed dishes (in my dishwasher).

4. Drank a gallon or two of hot Spiced Chai....

5. Cleaned off the ironing board, so I could use it for the hemming...

6. Dished ice cream for the husband and myself.

7. Played games on the computer.

8. Watched HGTV.

9. Tried to catch up on some work.

10. Updated my facebook page.

11. Drank some more hot tea.

12. Worked some more on some STAT work.

13. Fell asleep at the computer (at about 1:45 am), cleared off the bed, put away laundry, ran the dryer, fed and watered the cat, herded my sleeping husband upstairs, and turned off all of the lights.

Thursday Thirteen #36: Power outage

Thirteen Things about Power Outages

1. The fans will stop working, making it HOT in our bedroom.

2. The HOT bedroom will wake up the HOT husband (thankfully, so we could set the alarm on the cell phones!)

3. The power outage will prompt me to find all of the candles.

4. And remember where the flashlights are stored.

5. And where all of the matches are...

6. And since all of the power in the neighborhood is out, EVERYONE will be getting up late...

7. The house sure smells nice from all of the candles.

8. My son got creative on ideas for making coffee for me...suggesting plugging in the coffee pot to the converter in the car!

9. I nixed that idea and went down to the Wawa to get some coffee...

10. I learned that since we live in government housing, and don't pay for our own electricity, apparently we have no rights to learn what is going on with the power outage, and no rights to report said outages (the &%$#@% power company has an automated line that you have to put in an account number, or recognized phone number or SS# to report or find out anything).

11. When the power IS actually turned back on, nothing in the house worked, because all of the breakers were popped.

12. I learned that my children CAN get ready in about half of the usual time...without the distractions of the radio, TV or video games....

13. It was nice sitting at the table with my children, eating breakfast by candlelight...realizing that we need to go over some history...my daughter said she felt like a refuge in WWII, sitting in candlelight...ummmm....yeah...history review time!

Thursday Thirteen #35: Back to School

Thirteen Things about The First Week of School

1. School buses don't always stop where they are supposed to stop.

2. Transportation offices that are opened at 5:00 in the morning do not necessarily answer the phones on the first day of school.

3. A trip across town to the high school that normally takes over an hour in rush hour traffic CAN take significantly less time, when pushed....

4. Pushing that drive is worth it to make it back in time to put the rest of the kids on their buses.

5. When all 5 school-aged children come home with paperwork, you WILL develop writer's cramp.

6. When signing paperwork, something WILL be missed.

7. There will ALWAYS be something that was missed on the back-to-school shopping list.

8. There will need to be multiple checks written...for varying amounts of money...PE gear, band fees, PTA....

9. Every school needs volunteers...but none allow parents to bring younger siblings along.

10. Younger siblings get VERY bored when their entertainment committee leaves to go back to school.

11. Even the cats get bored when the other kids go back to school.

12. My grocery budget goes WAY down now that my kids have gone back to school.

13. Everyone in my home (except the 4-year-old) is happy that school is back in session.

Thursday Thirteen #34: Randomness

Thirteen Things out of my groggy ramblings:

1. One night of less than 6 hours of sleep makes functioning hard.

2. Two nights of less than 6 hours of sleep makes functioning exceedingly difficult.

3. School starts in 5 days.

4. My oldest will be getting ON the bus at 6:00 am.

5. Whoever determined that all of the schools would have their various Open Houses and Orientations during the same week did not have children going to 3 different schools.

6. A combination of no sleep and LOTS of coffee means I CAN function, but I have the jitters.

7. Realizing that Football Tryouts lasted all week really screwed with my schedule.

8. Thank goodness for school activity buses!

9. And friends willing to pick up children when you can't get there in time!

10. Having children who can cook is a HUGE help!

11. It is starting to feel like it *might* be getting close to fall.

12. I have wierd dreams when I haven't had enough sleep.

13. I wish I had more time for blog hopping...I'm missing all of my favorite reads!

Thursday Thirteen #33: Raising Boys

Thirteen Things about Raising BOYS!!

1. I was worried about not having fun dressing my boys...but I was wrong!!! They're fun to dress, too....

3. You will be baptized by your sons at some point while they're still wearing diapers (or not).

4. There will be cars and Legos and Lincoln logs and trains and planes and lots of other little toys all over the hosue.

5. Boys play differently than girls...things get a LOT more physical with boys around.

6. There will also be tools all over...and parts of the things they are taking apart with those tools.

7. The boys' collections vary GREATLY from the girls...The boys bring in bugs, rocks, and stray screws, nails and pieces of trash.

8. MY boys are seriously addicted to electronics...are they all this way?!?

9. Bicycles, baseball bats, cleats, gloves, and all-too-easily-seen CUP....never put away.

10. The desire to be a MAN...will get them to do all kinds of chores...killing bugs, taking out garbage, mowing the yard....

11. They want to play DANGEROUS sports...the poor mama's heart will never be the same....

12. They get injuries playing above dangerous sports...with scars that they are OH SO PROUD to show off!

13. My boys teach me every day how much I need their father to help raising them!!

Thirteen Things about Raising GIRLS!

1. Dressing little girls is FUN...there are SO many pretty things!

2. No matter how much pink you put on them, someone will call them a boy!

3. No matter how clean you try to keep them, they WILL play in the dirt!

4. Little girls LOVE to play princesses!

5. Big girls long to be treated like princesses.

6. Tween girls will cause you to despair of them EVER acting (or dressing) like princesses.

7. When there are two or more girls in the house, there WILL be lots of giggling.

8. When there are two or more girls in the house, there WILL also be lots of fights.

9. If you (the mother) decide you don't like pink, EVERYONE will give you pink everything.

10. If you don't like pink, ALL of your girls will ADORE pink.

11. About the time you get to the point where you can tolerate pink, they will have switched their favorite color to red or purple.

12. As hard as you may try to avoid it, Barbies WILL take over the house (or Bratz or Polly Pocket)!

13. Raising girls will challenge you to the core of your being, and teach you things you had no idea you needed to learn.

Thirteen Things about getting ready to send kids back to school:

1. We have 33 days until school starts.

4. We have to figure out where the $$ is going to come from to pay for this.

5. We have uniform rentals to pay for, for Marching Band and Concert Band.

6. We have to get through two weeks of Band Camp.

7. The house still needs to stay clean.

***Anyone else looking forward to Back to School?

Thursday Thirteen #29: Hurricane Preparedness

It is hurricaine season....something I haven't even thought much about for our last 4 years in Montana. Now, with hurricaines bearing down on us, and us living in a coastal city, I think I need to be prepared...at least a little! How realistic these things are for a family of 8...I'm not sure....but at least I'm working on it! So, for your pleasure...from the NOAA weather site

Thirteen Things on the Hurricaine Bug-Out List

1. Water - at least 1 gallon daily per person for 3 to 7 days

***So, for a family of 8 humans and 2 cats, we're looking at....wait a sec...I can't do big numbers in my head....AT THE VERY LEAST....25 gallons of water for 3 days. Okay, logic says that's actually not too bad of a number. BUT, we live in military housing. WHERE AM I SUPPOSED TO STORE THIS?!?

2. Food - at least enough for 3 to 7 days

— non-perishable packaged or canned food / juices

— foods for infants or the elderly

— snack foods

— non-electric can opener

— cooking tools / fuel

— paper plates / plastic utensils

***Right. Food IS a necessity. But, first, we're going to cross off the infants/elderly one...there are neither in our house. Second, we've got the can opener covered. Check. Non-perishible packaged foods. Right. For 3 to 7 days. Again, WHERE am I to store all of this? Food for all 8 of us? for 3 days? that I am supposed to keep my children from digging into when I'm not looking? And, never mind that...I don't have extra money in my food budget.... Paper plates, utinsels, etc...not a problem...dig out the camping/picnic stuff. Cooking fuel...we've been needing to buy gas for the grill...this is as good of an excuse as any.

3. Blankets / Pillows, etc.

***Easy peasy...pull 'em off the bed, and we're good.

4. Clothing - seasonal / rain gear/ sturdy shoes

***First, how much? are we making sure we have suitcases packed in case we evacuate? So, how many changes of clothes per kid? 3 days? 7 days? Rain gear? I've come to the conclusion that we lived in Montana for too long...we're just not used to rain any more...

5. First Aid Kit / Medicines / Prescription Drugs

***Note to self: BUY BANDAIDS!! The rest is in pretty good shape.

6. Toiletries / Hygiene items / Moisture wipes

***Again, for staying in the house if there's no power, or for evacuating? *note to self: Find out where the Navy evacuates dependents TO.

7. Flashlight / Batteries

***Flashlight, check. MUST BUY BATTERIES.

8. Radio - Battery operated and NOAA weather radio

***Radio, check. MUST BUY BATTERIES. Do we really HAVE TO have the NOAA weather radio?

9. Telephones - Fully charged cell phone with extra battery and a traditional (not cordless) telephone set

***I think we're okay on this...I just have to remember where my charger is at any given time...we have a converter in the car, so I can plug my regular, household phone charger into the car....though I don't have an extra battery...is that necessary?

10. Cash (with some small bills) and Credit Cards - Banks and ATMs may not be available for extended periods

***Granted, this sounds sensible...but do people ACTUALLY have "extra" money laying around that can be designated for this?!? NOT in our house....

11. Important documents - in a waterproof container or watertight resealable plastic bag— insurance, medical records, bank account numbers, Social Security card, etc.

***I have my container...just need to gather everything together....

12. Vehicle fuel tanks filled

***At the moment, we're good on this....

13. Pet care items

— proper identification / immunization records / medications

— ample supply of food and water

— a carrier or cage

— muzzle and leash

***Grrr....okay, I forgot all of this when we adopted our second cat...MUST BUY another carrier, and find out if she's had all of her shots. Oh, and WHAT is proper ID for a CAT?!?

Alright, enough of me....that is just part of the list....go to the NOAA Weather site, and see for yourself....and BE PREPARED!!

Thursday Thirteen #28

Thirteen Things about Women of Faith, 2008

1. Women Of Faith in Washington, DC was this past weekend.

2. I had the chance to go to Women of Faith with about 30 ladies from our church.

3. I drove up with my friend on Thursday, and got to go out to dinner in Chinatown with the friend we were staying with...and we got to ride the Metro...

4. Friday was the Pre-Conference, called I Second That Emotion. It was a good reminder that though we are emotional as women, we need to remember that our emotions do not have brains, and we need to use or brains to make decisions, not live by our emotions.

5. The rest of our group arrived Friday afternoon, and we found our seats for the main part of the conference...in the nose bleeds...I don't do heights.

6. The program on Friday night was increadible...GREAT music with Sandi Patty, Natalie Grant and Nicole Mullen. Speakers...Patsy Clairmont, Steve Arterburn, Marilyn Meberg, Jan Silvious, Sheila Walsh. Drama...Louise DeArt, Anita Renfroe and Allison Allen.

7. The hotel we stayed at was under construction, and we were NOT impressed...we were also told that the parking would be $36...turns out they were off by $12...and breakfast was *only* $19.95 per person.

8. Friday night, before the evening session, we got to head to dinner at a great little Chinese restaurant for dinner....the food was delicious....and they were BUSY...apparently they are that busy every night, all the time.

9. Saturday morning, we checked out of the motel and moved our van to the Verizon Center parking garage...which turned out to be only $12 for the whole day of parking.

10. Saturday's sessions were good again...more increadible lessons in dependence on God and recognizing that we are not alone.

11. About some individual speakers...

Patsy Clairmont is one energetic young lady...

Nicole Mullen is MY AGE, and is in REALLY good shape...that woman can DANCE...and her nephew...the Oscar Meyer Weiner boy that was on Oprah...he can dance, too!!

Steve Arterburn...the man has lived thru a lot to bring us something as wonderful as Women of Faith!

12. Saturday we had a ton of fun with the other ladies from the church, eating lunch together, and getting pictures together.

13. The BEST part of the trip was the ride home with my friend, talking it all over and getting to know each other....Thanks, Julie....love you!!

I hope you get a chance to attend a Women of Faith conference...it is a wonderful, relaxing, fun time!

6. Another dog…a mutt that was given to us and shot by a neighbor

7. Caramel….my oldest daughter’s dog

8. Claude – my dog while I was on my own, given away by my roommate

9. Sam – My husband’s dog growing up….Sam was an English Bulldog

10. Jeanette – my husband’s dog growing up – a Rottweiler

11. Hot Dog – My dog growing up – a Border collie - the best do we ever had

12. Pup – My parents’ dog…Daddy found her in a dumpster when she was just a puppy, and gave her to my mom when they were still in their first month of marriage. I LOVED Pup…she was a GREAT mother…she never had any puppies of her own, but she was a MUCH better mother to the kittens than were any of the cats we had growing up. She even nursed those poor abandoned kittens.

13. We’ve also had a Bearded Dragon, white mice, two German Shephards, another Border Collie, 2 or 3 more cats, several more mutts that showed up and were taken in…. oh, and I think my brothers had some geckos....

What kind of pets have you had?

Thursday Thirteen #23

Thirteen Things about the last week of school.

1. Too much is crammed into this week.

2. Monday was D.A.R.E. graduation.

3. Tuesday was softball practice...

4. ...and rain...which meant that hubby's 4 games were cancelled (YIPPEE!!)

5. Wednesday was 5th grade promotions...

6. ...and awards...our 5th grader was actualy awarded for his good attendance, even though we moved here in the middle of the year.

7. He got to leave school early, and go out to lunch with his dad!

8. Final baseball games...Tournament is OVER!

9. Jon's team lost their second game on Monday night.

10. Heather's team lost their second game last night.

11. Justin's team WON, again...they won every game all season long, and the whole tournament, too.

12. Today and tomorrow are 1/2 days...

13. We still have post-season parties for all three teams....pool parties and beach parties, with pizza and ice cream and lots of excited kids....

I'm hoping (foolishly?) that life will slow down a little bit now that summer is upon us. So we can do some things like go to the beach and spend some time with the cousins, at their pool...

How is your summer stacking up?
